[ti:Large Hadron Rap] [ar:Alpine Kat] [al:CERN] [00:24.45]Twenty-seven kilometers of tunnel under ground [00:27.59]Designed with mind to send protons around [00:29.80]A circle that crosses through Switzerland & France [00:32.50]Sixty nations contribute to scientific advance [00:34.89]Two beams of protons swing round, through the ring they ride [00:37.41]『Til in the hearts of the detectors, they』re made to collide [00:39.88]And all that energy packed in such a tiny bit of room [00:42.38]Becomes mass, particles created from the vacuum [00:45.02]And then… [00:48.16]LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone [00:49.89]ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions [00:52.26]CMS & ATLAS are two of a kind [00:54.79]They』re looking for whatever new particles they can find. [00:57.50]The LHC accelerates the protons & the lead [00:59.97]And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head. [01:02.42]We see asteroids & planets, stars galore [01:04.62]We know a black hole resides at each galaxy’s core [01:07.19]But even all that matter cannot explain [01:09.95]What holds all these stars together – something else remains [01:12.18]This dark matter interacts only through gravity [01:14.56]And how do you catch a particle there’s no way to see [01:16.92]Take it back to the conservation of energy [01:19.65]And the particles appear, clear as can be [01:22.46]You see particles flying, in jets they spray [01:24.87]But you notice there ain』t nothin』, goin』 the other way [01:27.35]You say, 「My law has just been violated – it don』t make sense! [01:29.75]There’s gotta be another particle to make this balance.」 [01:32.17]And it might be dark matter, & for first [01:34.77]Time we catch a glimpse of what must fill most of the known 『Verse. [01:37.12]Because… [01:39.79]LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone [01:42.16]ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions [01:44.63]CMS & ATLAS are two of a kind [01:47.16]They』re looking for whatever new particles they can find. [01:49.78]Antimatter is sort of like matter’s evil twin [01:52.28]Because except for charge & handedness of spin [01:54.71]They』re the same for a particle & its anti-self [01:56.96]But you can』t store an antiparticle on any shelf [01:59.76]Cuz when it meets its normal twin, they both annihilate [02:02.03]Matter turns to energy & then it dissipates [02:04.54]When matter is created from energy [02:07.02]Which is exactly what they』ll do in the LHC [02:09.33]You get matter & antimatter in equal parts [02:11.90]And they try to take that back to when the universe starts [02:14.32]The Big Bang – back when the matter all exploded [02:17.03]But the amount of antimatter was somehow eroded [02:19.45]Because when we look around we see that matter abounds [02:21.82]But antimatter’s nowhere to be found. [02:24.07]That’s why… [02:25.36]LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone [02:29.47]ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions [02:31.88]CMS & ATLAS are two of a kind [02:34.50]They』re looking for whatever new particles they can find. [02:37.02]The LHC accelerates the protons & the lead [02:39.62]And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head. [02:42.02]The Higgs Boson – that’s the one that everybody talks about. [02:44.36]And it’s the one sure thing that this machine will sort out [02:46.92]If the Higgs exists, they ought to see it right away [02:49.49]And if it doesn』t, then the scientists will finally say [02:51.91]「There is no Higgs! We need new physics to account for why [02:54.42]Things have mass. Something in our Standard Model went awry.」 [02:56.82]But the Higgs – I still haven』t said just what it does [02:59.64]They suppose that particles have mass because [03:01.77]There is this Higgs field that extends through all space [03:04.42]And some particles slow down while other particles race [03:06.85]Straight through like the photon – it has no mass [03:09.39]But something heavy like the top quark, it’s draggin』 its [03:11.34]And the Higgs is a boson that carries a force [03:14.32]And makes particles take orders from the field that is its source. [03:16.93]They』ll detect it…. [03:18.48]LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone [03:21.79]ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions [03:24.34]CMS & ATLAS are two of a kind [03:26.79]They』re looking for whatever new particles they can find. [03:29.44]Now some of you may think that gravity is strong [03:31.94]Cuz when you fall off your bicycle it don』t take long [03:34.26]Until you hit the earth, & you say, 「Dang, that hurt!」 [03:36.87]But if you think that force is powerful, you』re wrong. [03:39.01]You see, gravity – it’s weaker than Weak [03:41.72]And the reason why is something many scientists seek [03:44.20]They think about dimensions – we just live in three [03:46.84]But maybe there are some others that are too small to see [03:49.14]It’s into these dimensions that gravity extends [03:51.83]Which makes it seem weaker, here on our end. [03:54.36]And these dimensions are 「rolled up」 – curled so tight [03:56.62]That they don』t affect you in your day to day life [03:59.07]But if you were as tiny as a graviton [04:01.70]You could enter these dimensions & go wandering on [04:04.35]And they'd find you... [04:05.86]When LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone [04:09.27]ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions [04:11.74]CMS & ATLAS are two of a kind [04:14.27]They』re looking for whatever new particles they can find. [04:16.86]The LHC accelerates the protons & the lead [04:19.24]And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head.
